The day dawns clear and bright after yesterday’s rain. But it’s quite chilly!! Out come the jumpers and the all important hot chocolate. It’s still pretty windy.

We had always planned to drive the Mereenie Loop Road today to Kings Canyon, but wasn’t sure if it would be open following the rain. This is an unsealed stretch of road that crosses Aboriginal land and you need a permit to use it. We discover that it is open, and off we go! And man did we have some fun in the mud 🙂 We all reach the other side looking a tad dirtier than we did in the morning … when we reach Kings Canyon campground we all get questions from other campers as to what road we had been on …

The afternoon is spent drying all the wet stuff, and doing some much needed laundry. We have splurged on an Ensuite camping site, so each have our own small bathroom. I think this is probably the most scenic Hills Hoist I’ve ever hung my washing on 🙂

We have an evening activity planned today – the Light Towers experience at Kings Canyon. It’s dubbed an “immersive sound and light installation” by acclaimed British artist Bruce Munro. We saw his Field of Lights installation at Uluru many years ago, so figured we’d give it a go. We enjoyed drinks and canapes on the deck as we watched the sunset (including crazy things like eating green ants!), then wandered around the art installation. It was an interesting experience 🙂

They had live music going on the sunset deck, by a local guy called Pep Sammartino – he was awesome!
