Today we tackled the Kings Canyon Rim Walk in Watarrrka National Park!! This is a big walk, and we are all very thankful that the temperatures have dropped. It’s an absolutely spectacular walk, which we have done a couple of times before. The first section is about 500 steps straight up the side of the canyon, and just about kills me 🙂 Our group ranges in age from 7 to 60, so we spend 4 hours on the walk, with plenty of stops for snacks and drinks, and of course about a million photos …

It’s a really windy day, and I’ve got to say that messed with my head a bit … there are some sections that are very close to the edge of the canyon, and there are definitely no second chances if you slip … There were quite a few people walking – a number of international tourists with very small kids that were getting waaaayyyy too close to the edge of the canyon without adult supervision for my liking. But I think everyone made it back down!

Kings Canyon is a valley that cuts through sandstone, and has taken over 400 million years to form. There’s an amazing variety of landscapes to explore on this walk, from the Domes to the Garden of Eden, which was definitely worth the detour! The Domes are old sand dunes, and there are places where you can see ripples in the rock that was once the sea bed.

We were all pretty buggered by the end of the day, so decided to splurge and have dinner at the pub! After a quick drink at the sunset viewing area and listen to a couple of songs from Pep 🙂
