The day dawns crisp and bright. Another big drive day as we head north into South Australia. A very chilly morning in Gulnare as we pack up camp. Thank god for the lovely warm shower! $1 for 2 minutes 🙂
First stop for the day is Port Pirie to stock up on fresh fruit and veg after crossing the border yesterday. I find an Aldi, so I’m happy! The boys head off to refuel (definitely the most expensive part of the trip) and attempt to find coffee, but for some reason can’t quite work that one out …
Nick attempts to buy booze but nothing seems to open until later in the day (it being a public holiday) so we get moving.
The landscape changes quickly again as we head north on the Stuart Highway and soon we’re out on the open plains. We stop for lunch in Woomera and check out the Aircraft and Missile Park. It’s a weird place … it’s a town built solely to house the workers at the Weapons Range and seems a bit like a ghost town today.
Another quick stop that we love on this stretch of road is Lake Hart. It’s an amazing salt lake – there are loads along the Stuart Highway, but this one is probably the most accessible from the road. We spend a while wandering around – it’s an amazing sight. After our very chilly start to the day the sun is out now and it is getting HOT.
We pull off the road as a couple of wide loads pass us in the other direction – enormous buckets from what I’m guessing are very large tip trucks.
Our day is yet again slightly longer that planned, and we roll into Coober Pedy as the sun is setting. Camping the night at a slightly crazy place on the side of the hill with an amazing view.
